Pestro et al (1994) and van Beerendonk et al (1998) published data on patient knowledge and skills in the use of inhalers. Almost all the patients observed thought that they followed the instructions for use correctly but, in fact, up to 37% were not doing so. In particular, up to 90% of patients failed to use MDIs correctly. One of the major problems: co-ordination between actuation and inhalation.
The key features of Respimat® Soft Mist™ Inhaler are:
Long lasting, slow moving Soft Mist™ with the high fine particle fraction (less than 5.8 µm) is easily inhaled and results in excellent lung deposition.
1, 2, 4, 5, 8
Long lasting, slow moving Soft Mist™ is much slower than aerosol clouds from MDIs ; therefore it leads to lower deposition in the mouth and throat compared with CFC- and HFA-MDIs and simplifies inhalation to the lungs, where the medication is of most benefit to the patient.

The Respimat® Soft Mist™ Inhaler is actuated using the dose-release button in combination with a deep inspiration.
7
The Soft Mist™ produced by the inhaler which is slow moving and long lasting, and is easily inhaled, is generated independent of the patient's inspiratory flow.
6
The the Soft Mist™ lasts about six times longer (1,2 sec) than conventional MDIs, offering the patient more time between actuation and inhalation.
Different from CFC- and HFA- inhalation products Respimat® Soft Mist™ Inhaler is propellant free and therefore environmentally friendly. No propellant or energy source is needed. A spring provides the power to force the solution through the
uniblock to provide the unique Soft Mist™.
This simple mechanism provides easy feedback to the patient about remaining doses. It also supports correct dosing by locking after all doses have been removed.
The advantages of Respimat® Soft Mist™ Inhaler which result from the features of the Soft Mist™ make it suitable for all patients with asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
